Host Countries’ Hopes Dashed at Euro

The national teams of both host countries of the UEFA Euro 2012 have failed to progress from the Group stage of the championship.

Poland faced defeat in Wroclaws Municipal Stadium, as the Czech Republic took the lead with Petr Jirček scoring the only goal of the match. Also failing to progress to the knockout stage in Group A was Russia, who lost 0-1 to Greece on the same day in Warsaws National Stadium. Warsaws Fan Zone by the Palace of Culture and Science saw around 165 000 people on the day of Polands disappointing final match.

Meanwhile, Ukraines hopes were dashed in Donetsk, with a 0-1 defeat against England, who along with France will progress from Group D to the quarter-finals.

The quarter-finals will kick off in Warsaw on 21 June as the Czech Republic and Portugal go head-to-head to decide which of these two talented teams will continue on to the semi-finals.
