Warsaw Marks 2 Years Since Smolensk Disaster

Poland has marked the two-year anniversary of a plane crash which killed President Lech Kacznysnki, the first lady Maria, and 94 other government officials and dignitaries.

The 2010 disaster happened in Smolensk, Russia, when Polish representatives were travelling to mark the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre where 20 000 Poles were killed by Soviet secret police.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk attended ceremonies in Warsaw's Powazki military cemetery, while Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski marked the day by attending a mass at the Field Cathedral of the Polish Army. At the crash site in Smolensk, Russian Parliament Speaker Sergei Naryshkin and Polish Culture Minister Bogdan Zdrojewski laid wreaths.

However, an "alternate" ceremony also took place, led by Jaroslaw Kaczynski, twin brother of the ex-President Kaczynski and leader of the Law and Justice Party. Many gathered outside the Presidential Palace for the event, showing their support for Kaczynski, who has said he believes that the crash was an assassination.
