who is he?

Following a very pleasant recent visit to your City I am left with a question which I am sure one of your regular helpful contributors will help resolve. In the Main Square there was a gentleman making beautiful sounds in an amazing falsetto voice more becoming a young boy soprano or how I would imagine a Castrato to sound, we stood spellbound as he sang in another tongue, his voice filling a crowded square without any apparent amplification or effort, is he a priest or monk? please help if you can.
