Leave the car at home

Krakow undoubtedly has many charms, but the heavy traffic, congested roads and air pollution are certainly not among them. That's why the city is taking part in Car-Free Day, on September 22. It is just one of many places in Poland and around the world where motorists will be actively encouraged to seek alternative forms of transport, and to think about the effects that their driving habits have not just on the environment, but on those around them and their cities as a whole. So, when the day comes, take the tram or bus to work or university - and take the opportunity for a deep breath of relatively clean air. For tourists in Krakow it's even easier to take part. After all, the best way to sample the charms of the city is on foot - a leisurely stroll in the famous 'Golden Polish Autumn' is hard to beat. If you plan to go sightseeing further afield, there are plenty of cycle hire points around the city.
