December 2006

The vigilant Viennese may have banned Father Christmas this year, but fans of the red-suited fellow need not fear when it comes to Cracow. In fact, Santa has already been spotted right in the midst of the Christmas Market, reindeer in tow. He looked like he'd had a couple of mulled wines, but after all, it's not every year that you get kicked out of a major European city such as Vienna. He needs a bit of consolation....

In the meantime, it's time to make the most of the festive season while it lasts. Cracow is awash with Christmas traditions, many of them unique to the city. Drop into the Historical Museum to witness the winners of the longstanding Christmas Crib competition. And for a full intro into folkish customs, head for the magical Ethnographic Museum in Kazimierz, one of the city's hidden treasures.

Of course, the countdown has already started to the biggest night of the year in Cracow - 'Sylwester.' New Year's Eve is a major event here, and as usual a concert will rock the Main Square in the lead-up to midnight. Expect a fair amount of mayhem - take a suit of medieval armour for full peace of mind....!

If you're looking for an outstanding romantic getaway, Zamek Korzkiew takes the prize. But if budget rather than fairy tale is key, Tournet guestrooms is a passable option, and fairly near the action. For mid-range choices, try Eden, Saski or Floryan.

All the best from Cracow Life!
