Wroclaw Built on Ancient Cemetery?

In what seems to confirm the hypothesis of Wroclaw's academics, the city of Wroclaw appears to have been built on an ancient cemetery. It was during digs on Kuznicza street near the Old Town's Market Square, that graves older than the city itself were discovered. Dating back to the 12th century, the graves are not the first evidence of remains buried under the city. However, they do seem to be a decisive final piece of the puzzle joining what was previously though of as several smaller cemeteries to one huge necropolis.

The cemetery is though to have held the tombs of the inhabitants of a settlement on the left bank of the Oder river, particularly artisans and craftsmen such as blacksmiths and shoemakers. The dead had to make way for the living in 1241, when settlers from German states such as Lusatia, Thuringia, and Meissen arrived looking for a prime spot for their new settlement.
