Wroclaw hosts Speedway World Cup Final 2005

This August will see the welcome return of the FIM Speedway World Cup Race-Off and Final to Wroclaw, taking place in the city's very own Olympic Stadium.

The Olympic Stadium staged the inaugural SWC Race-Off and Final back in 2001 and Polish fans will once again be able to see the top speedway nations in the world compete for the coveted Ove Fundin Trophy.

BSI, the rights holders of the world championship FIM Speedway World Cup (SWC) recently announced that tickets are on sale. John Postlethwaite commented: Since we introduced the World Cup in its current format, the Race Off and Final has provided the most exciting racing we have ever seen in team racing. The event has grown over the years and the passion amongst all the teams, and in particular the Poles, to win the gold medal show how much this means to everyone involved. The World Cup is a terrific spectacle and one that no speedway fan should miss."

Postlethwaite continued: We are delighted to be back in Wroclaw for the World Cup. I remember very well the Race Off and Final in 2001 when we had taken over the rights to the team world championship and introduced the new format. The racing we witnessed over those two events was unbelievable and I cant remember two speedway events in three days ever being so exciting. I am sure that this years event will be no different.

Poland has made all of the four previous Finals of the World Cup, and last year was the first time Poland did not win their qualifying round - instead they got through to the 2004 Final via the Race-Off.

This year they face Australia, Sweden and a qualifier in Event 2 in Sweden on August 2nd the winner of this event qualifies straight to the Final, the second and third placed teams will go to the Race-Off to compete for one of two places up for grabs in the Final.

Sweden are the defending World Champions and this year will see them gunning for a third consecutive World Cup gold medal.
