Roman Villa Unearthed In Sofia

A Roman villa dating back to the third century AD has been discovered in a Sofia borough.

The tremendous find takes in some six buildings, plus the proverbial pot of gold (well, at least silver, as witnessed by a stash of coins).

The fieldwork has focused on an area between two unprepossessing apartment blocks. Clues were revealed when the housing was erected in 1966, but somehow the research was not followed through, and the project was all but forgotten.

Owing to the scale and richness of the find, there is hope that the site in Hadji Dimitar could ultimately be opened up to the public, if funds are forthcoming.
