Bulgaria Unification Celebrations

Celebrations are underway throughout Bulgaria today, marking 120 years since the unification with Eastern Rumelia that helped forge the modern form of the country.

The official ceremony, attended by the President and Prime Minister, was held in Plovdiv, where on the 6th September 1885 a march from the town of Unification (then called Saedinenie) ended by means of a historical proclamation announcing the unification of Bulgaria with the previously autonomous Ottoman province. The 6th of September has been a national holiday ever since.
