Film Festival Wraps Up in Moscow

One of Moscow's most exciting annual cultural events is the Moscow International Film Festival, which has taken place in the city since 1959. The festival attracts talented filmmakers from Russia and across the globe, as well as many stars of the western film world.

This year's edition of the festival, its 33rd (the festival was biennial until 1995), took place from 23 June to 2 July and finished with a closing award ceremony. The big winner this year was Las Olas (The Waves) a film by Spanish director Alberto Morais, which nabbed the main prize - the Golden St. George. The star of the film, Carlso Alvarez-Novoa, was awarded the Best Actor prize. Picking up the Silver St George was Chapiteau Show by Russian filmmaker Sergei Loban. Amongst the remaining award-winners was Helen Mirren, who was awarded the Special Prize for the Outstanding Achievement in the Career of Acting.
