Officials Find 700m Tunnel Between Slovakia and Ukraine

Slovak officials have discovered a sophisticated tunnel running for some 700 metres, linking Slovakia and Ukraine, and believed to have been used for smuggling. The tunnel was built 6 feet into the ground, and was built using sophisticated mining technology. It was even equipped with its own railway for quick transportation of carts filled with contraband.

The tunnel connected a warehouse in a border town of Slovakia with a newly built family home in Ukrainian border city Uzhorod. Officials believe that cigarettes were the main focus of the smugglers, as more than 2.5 million contraband cigarettes were seized in the raid as well.

Its possible the smugglers also participated in human trafficking, as Slovakia is a newly joined member of the EU.
