Hockey Championships Underway

The 2011 World Men's Ice Hockey Championship has kicked off in Bratislava, the host city of the event alongside fellow Slovak city Kosice. It is the largest international sporting event hosted in Bratislava's history as part of independent Slovakia. Flags are flying across the city as proud Bratislavians welcome the many tourists that have arrived to their city to experience the excitement of the championships.

In the opening match, Germany surprised many with a win over hockey heavyweights Russia 2-0. Thomas Greilinger and Patrick Reimer scored the points for the German side.

The Hockey Championships continue until 15 May.
