Celica Hostel
Editor's review
This hostel adjacent to the Metelkova squat used to be a military prison and is today one of the most unique hostels in the world. As the hottest place to stay in Ljubljana it is almost always booked, so plan ahead if you want the experience of staying behind bars in this madcap hipster haven. Each room has been decorated by local, strung-out Metelkovites resulting in a range of jailspaces from sparse and minimal to more psychedelic freakouts. Rooms for anywhere from 2 to 14 people are available, with rooms for 4 or more having in suite toilets and showers. With an Arabic-style bar and restaurant on the premises, and it's location in the Metelkova compound, this place stays loud and loose until the wee hours. Near the train station, it's a 10 minute walk to the riverside cafes of the Old Town. Free internet and a proper breakfast make it that much more of a bargain, but the real reason to stay here is, yeah - it's fucking cool. Prices vary by room size and season.

Celica is an amazing project and one worth experiencing. I would say, though, that the 12-bed dorm is pushing it a little too far in terms of filling the space with beds. AMuch too crushed but even then, the shower and toilet facilitis are vastly superior to anything else I,ve seen in a hostel. As for the rest of Celica, well next time I will check out one of the rooms when a girlfriend comes with me or I am not leaving at 5am .-) Last night the entertainment was a devastating bunch of virtuoso musicians doing whatever it is they were doing (it was their own music, their very own) and clearly a lot of people come to Celica for the entertainment alone as there was quite a crowd of non-residents. Definitely a must-visit place!

One of the funniest hostels I have ever stayed in. Excellent! Just go there!

I've been locked up before, and no doubt I'll be locked up again. I spent an unforgettable night here during my recent world tour... shared bunk beds with Young Jeezy too. Would have been 5/5 had it not been for his snoring!
