Boris Bućan. Posters

"A painter and graphic designer who in the late 1960s became one of the first Croatian artists to gravitate towards art in public space and to create Yugoslavian pop‑art. Bucan went down in history for his work in the centre of Zagreb such as painting a pavement or painting murals on building walls went down in history. Those acts of defiance against confining art to the constraints of a fossilised gallery and institutional system and the commodification of art were doubtless triggered by the context of the Yugoslavian economic boom and fascination with the glitz and glamour of Western consumerism.

Bucan has developed an individual and immediately recognisable style, particularly in posters, which he has been making since the 1970s. Powerful, distinct shapes, vivid colours, geometrised and multiplied elements arranged into eye‑catching, at times psychedelic, patterns, and the use of commercial and advertising hacks situate his poster art between op‑art and pop‑art.

What brought him global fame was a poster designed for the Croatian National Theatre in Split for its production of Igor Stravinsky’s ballet The Firebird. This poster was reproduced on the cover of the catalogue The Power of the Poster, an exhibition staged at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London in 1998.

The current show of Boris Bućan’s work will comprise a series of his ten best‑known large‑scale theatre posters dating from the 1970s
and 1980s.
