Searching For The King // Opera Krakowska

"Searching for the King" is a universal story about Independence and national identity. The script of Michał Znaniecki's original play is based on Juliusz Słowacki's "The Spirit King" and Shakespeare's "King Lear."

The Spirit of the Nation — an eternal revolutionary, destroyer of existing forms that develop through cataclysms and revolutions and calling for national solidarity contribute to the guiding motto of the show. The main character of the performance is the King, a symbolic figure, a leader — a character drawn from broader literary contexts, reaching back to Shakespeare's King Lear. He is a metaphor of sorts for the Mother-State, a kingdom-State. Before the audience's eyes, the kingdom is partitioned, leading to a tragedy. The king is accompanied on stage by three daughters and a jester, following traditional dramas that deal with the division of a State. Moreover, the titular King is surrounded by a court of faithful subjects who fight for him, support him, encourage him, and do not allow him to give up. The subjects are played by the charges of social care homes. The musical narrative is composed of a selection of the most wonderful fragments of Giuseppe Verdi's work he created with the idea to compose an opera for "King Lear" — which he never completed.
