The house where Jan Matejko, a famous Polish painter, lived and worked holds the oldest biographical museum devoted to the life and work of the artist in Poland. In his paintings, Matejko depicted the most momentous events in Polish history. For over a century, the Museum has been gathering items related to his work as an artist and teacher, as well as to Matejko's passion for collecting, showing objects connected to the culture of Poland, Europe as well as the Middle East and the Far East. Both at the permanent and numerous temporary exhibitions, the Jan Matejko House popularises the unknown aspects of the artist’s life and work, as well as his extensive collections of handicrafts, textiles and militaria.
