August 19 1960. Soviet Russia sent two dogs into space - and brought them back to earth again in one piece.
Thus was born the legend of Belka and Strelka the space dogs, and the seeds of an idea for a laid back and kooky club in Riga were planted.
The name Space Dog is apt for this club in more ways than one. Not only does it honour the brave pair, but space in the metaphorical sense of the word seems to be where most of the club's clients hang out. Nevertheless, it's a fun place to get a beer and hang out if you're not the type for shiny shoes and disco balls.
Incidentally, Strelka went on to have puppies, one of which ended up as a gift to the White House in Washington DC and itself continued the noble line by mating with a Kennedy dog. The relationship was probably the closest that the USSR and the USA ever got during the Cold War.
