Gdansk Launches European Shakespearean Association

Gdansk is spearheading a network that will promote the work of legendary English scribe, William Shakespeare.

The Baltic city is already a beacon of Shakespearean culture. Since 1997, it has hosted the international Shakespeare Festival. And last September, the cornerstone was laid for a Elizabethan style playhouse, echoing one that had existed on the site in the 17th Century.

The new EuropeaN enterprise has already welcomed several distinguished groups into the fold: Fundatiei William Shakespeare in Craiova (Romania), Gyulai V rszˇnh in Gyula (Hungary), the Shakespeare Festival im Globe Neuss in Neuss (Germany) and the Big Bill Festival in London.

The aim of the association is to promote Shakespeare's legacy, and cooperate in joint cultural projects of varying kinds. Several more institutions have already been invited to join the network.
