family history

my mother,s family comes from danzig, the family name werner,they were german and moved to the uk in 1892. we are trying to start tracing our family history.The great grandparents were heiderman and werner.What happened to the germans in danzig after ww11, where did they go?Would the family records still be in danzig or would they have been moved to germany and if so where?Any help at all appreciated-and where in danzig would we look, we cannot speak polish-thanks in advance
