The work of the Meissen porcelain factory is the focus of this exhibition, which also lays out the history of porcelain in Europe. Porcelain was developed originally in China (hence its frequently used alternate name ‘china’), and Europeans struggled to understand the methods used to create these mysterious white works of art. It wasn’t until Augustus the Strong employed the alchemist Bottger that porcelain began to become understood in a European context from within the 18th-century Meissen castle factory.
