Editor's review

It could be said that Tallinn is the best European capital for walking. The city centre is compact, and fairly easy to navigate, while you are rarely out of sight of beautiful monuments and architecture dating back to medieval times.

If that's your thing, it would be a mistake to miss one of the longest streets in the centre, Pikk Tänav. It runs all the way from the Town Hall Square, almost to the harbour, from where you can, should the notion grab you, hop on a ferry and visit the Finnish capital of Helsinki.

The street itself is stuffed to bursting with history and heritage, with many of the buildings carefully preserved from the 15th century onwards. That's not to say that modern businesses have not moved in too and done things up a bit, but it's still a wonderful walk that can take you close to Tallinn as it was in days of yore.
