Belarus' Russian influences reach far and wide, and if there's one place where even visitors can be thankful for that, it's certainly at the Bolshoi. It was named of course after the legendary Bolshoi theatre in Moscow, home to some of the greatest ballet performers in the history of the art. Minsk's own version is a similarly prestigious institution, opened in 1933 and now sits in an elegant building in the posh district of Trinity Hill. Nowadays the theatre, which is officially known as the National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theatre of the Republic of Belarus, puts on a wide range of grand performances throughout the year (with the usual break during the summer months). Belarusian and Russian classics are frequently staged, as well as the usual international favourites such as Carmen or Swan Lake.
