Editor's review

Even death was no protection from the Nazi regime in Germany during the second world war.

Dissenting officers, headed by General von Stauffenberg, tried to blow up Hitler with a briefcase bomb less than a year before the end of the war. They failed, and following execution von Stauffenberg and his men were buried at this pretty Schöneberg cemetery. Not content, the bodies were later dug up and burned, and the ashes were scattered to the winds.

Those with an Eye Spy book of graves can tick off others here - including the final resting places of master storytellers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm (alongside Herman and Rudolf). Politicians, artists and scientists were laid to rest here too.

Careful - Claus Schenck Graf von Stauffenberg was a lieutenant-colonel attached to the Wehrmacht general staff.. As well as the burial site, the memorial museum set up in Stuttgart's old castle to him and his jurist brother Berthold is worth a visit.
