Editor's review

Almost 3,000 people died at this place during the Nazi years. By the laws of the day, they were not murdered as they had been sentenced to death by the courts; by the enduring laws of morality and humanity, their deaths were criminal acts of injustice.

The exhibitions at Gedenkstätte Plötzensee recall with pinpoint clarity and accuracy just what was happening in this centre of death. There are displays dedicated to individuals, to the history of the prison, to resistance fighters, and to the most famous of Hitler's opponents - Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, who very nearly succeeded in killing the Fuhrer with a briefcase bomb on July 20 1944.

Entry is free, but guides are not available. Curators ask that visitors respect the museum as a place of quiet reflection.
