As a cultural centre, De Balie regularly hosts film screenings, seminars, debates, and theatre performances, but as these typically take place in Dutch, most visitors tend to stick to the equally fantastic adjoining Grand Cafe. Inside the spacious, and truly grand Grand Cafe, the kitchen serves up delicious classics like organic beef burgers or spinach cannelloni. In the relaxed cafe corner, students and creative types drink mint tea and quietly surf the internet on the free WiFi provided. And with De Balies convenient location next to the Leidseplein square, its is a great place to stop for a bite on your way to the many theatres and cinemas in the area.

Great place with daily cinema (in English). Friendly outgoing service. Looks like an old court house with big wooden stairs in the center of the restaurant. Try the homemade burgers. Like!
Less of a restaurant, more a place for a quick coffee and a light bite to eat (soups, sandwiches etc). Service was not brilliant, nor was it cheap.
