Editor's review

As with all vast construction projects, the Museumsquartier had its stops and starts. But we can only say that we were bowled over when we first set foot in the Leopold Museum in 2002. It's already a Viennese highlight, and rightfully so - put it at the top of your list if you're a fan of Klimt, Schiele or Kokoschka, or simply interested in gallery design in general. The collection has its origins in the 1950's when a certain young Doctor Leopold began collecting works by a relatively obscure Austrian painter. That artist - Egon Schiele - suddenly rocketed to star status, enabling the good Doctor to expand his collection. The scores of Austrian treasures finally found a home in 2001, and besides paintings by the masters listed above, you can enjoy some exquisite examples of folk and decorative art. Don't miss it.

We had a fantastic time exploring the 'Museumquartier'. The Leopold was a highlight. A state of the art museum. Excellent lighting. The whole quarter provided a refreshing dose of modernity amidst the surrounding historic quarters. Would recommend!
