Visas and Travel Documents
In general, visitors from the following countries do not need a visa to enter Bulgaria:
Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Honduras, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Malta, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama, Paraguay, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Korea, Romania, San Marino, Singapore, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK (British Citizen Passport Holders and British Nationals /Overseas/ only), USA, Uruguay, the Vatican, Venezuela, SAR - China (Hong Kong, Makao) All holders of passports from countries not mentioned in the list above need visas to enter Bulgaria. More detailed restrictions are below.
With Bulgaria's entry into the EU in 2007, Bulgaria's visa requirements have been upgraded to meet EU requirements. Basically, entry into Bulgaria is now as (relatively) simple as entry into any EU Member State.
Entry requirements for Americans: Citizens of the USA do not need a visa to visit Bulgaria for a period of up to 90 days within a six-month period. Passports must be valid for at least three months after entry.
Entry requirements for UK nationals: UK passport holders, endorsed British Citizen, do not need a visa to visit Bulgaria for a period of up to 90 days in a six-month period. Passports should be valid for the period of intended stay. Other UK passport holders require a visa and a passport that is valid for at least six months.
Entry requirements for Canadians: Canadians do not need a visa to visit Bulgaria for a period of up to 90 days within a six-month period. A passport valid for at least three months after entry is required.
Entry requirements for Australians: Australians do not need a visa to visit Bulgaria for a period of up to 90 days within a six-month period. A passport valid for at least three months after entry is required.
Entry requirements for South Africans: South Africans need a visa to enter Bulgaria. A passport valid for at least six months on entry is required and a visa will only be issued if blank pages are available.
Entry requirements for New Zealanders: New Zealanders do not require a visa for a maximum stay of 90 days within a six-month period. A valid passport valid for at least three months on entry is required.
Entry requirements for Irish nationals: Irish nationals do not need a visa to visit Bulgaria for a period of up to 90 days within a six-month period. A passport valid for the period of intended stay is required.
Passport/Visa Note: Visitors must have proof of sufficient funds or onward or return tickets in addition to other documents needed for the next destination. Valid health insurance is required. All visitors to Bulgaria must register as foreigners at a local police station within five days of arrival. This registration is usually done as a matter of course through the hotel or accommodation establishment. Visitors are advised to check this, as a dated registration slip has to be submitted when leaving the country. Immigration and entry regulations are very strictly enforced. Passports of all visitors should be valid for at least six months on entry for those requiring a visa, and three months on entry for visa exempt nationals other than those from EU countries, whose passports must be valid for period of stay.
Otherwise, all except the following require entry visas to Bulgaria:
Nationals of EU countries for stays of up to 90 days within each six-month period (except nationals of Estonia, Ireland and the UK, who may stay for up to 30 days within a six-month period);
Nationals of Chile, Iceland, Malaysia and Norway for stays of up to 90 days within a six-month period;
Nationals of Andorra, Israel, Japan, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Switzerland, and Vatican City for stays of up to 30 days within each six-month period;
Nationals of Croatia, Korea (Rep), Macedonia (Former Yugoslav Republic of), San Marino and Tunisia.
Note: Nationals of Afghanistan, Angola, Bangladesh, Congo (Dem Rep), Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iran, Iraq, Liberia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, Sri Lanka and Sudan must apply for an airport transit visa and may not leave the airport transit lounge. They need to present a valid flight reservation to get the visa.
Validity: Single-entry visas for tourist visits are normally valid for three months from date of issue for a maximum stay of 30 days. Multiple-entry visas are for business visits and are normally valid for three months from date of issue. Transit: Up to 24 hours.
The Bulgarian visas are issued by the Bulgarian embassies and consulates abroad, not at the airports or the land and sea passport control points in Bulgaria. Visa application requirements may include but are not limited to:
One passport-size photo;
Return ticket or documentation for next destination;
Fee, payable in cash or by postal order only;
Proof of sufficient funds (at least 50 USD a day);
Proof of paid fare for onward destination;
For motor vehicle transit, proof of an extra 200 USD for each entry;
Proof of a secured return trip;
For business visits: Letters from the applicant's company and from the Bulgarian business partner, endorsed by the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce;
For private visits: A letter of invitation by a Bulgarian citizen endorsed by the local authorities.
Please see this website for a list of all Bulgarian embassies abroad.
Please Read Before Commenting: We are not the official Bulgarian Consulate, and therefore we cannot answer your specific questions about Bulgarian visas. WE DO NOT ISSUE INVITATION LETTERS! Please direct all questions to the Bulgarian Consulate in your country. Thank you.
Hi im from the philippines and i get bulgariaan visa for 3months,is it possible for me to travel from bulgaria to italy for visit only.Reply
You would need a new visa for Italy because Bulgaria is a different country and not in the Schengen zone. If you wanted to fly to Italy you would need to get an Italian visa. You may be able to get a visa on arrival but you will have to check with the Italian government visa website. Otherwise, if you enter a different country within the Schengen zone, then you can visit Italy while on that visa. Schengen countries between Bulgaria & Italy are: Slovakia, Greece, Slovenia, Hungary, Austria, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic.Reply
hello i am Lebanese and i have a USA tourist visa valid for 5 years .can i visit bulgaria with a USA visa?Reply
Nope. Usually a tourist visa for one country does not give you entry to any other country, except in the case of entering "Schengen" countries within the EU. Bulgaria is not a Schengen country. The USA is not a Schengen country and it's also not even in Europe.Reply
I want visit in bulgariaReply
Why is only south africa mentioned in a continent of 50plus countries?Reply
Because this is just a general article on a travel website outlining the laws probably taken from a listing on the official Bulgarian government website. The government website probably listed information about visas for the countries they get the most applications and questions from, and/or, the countries they have the closest relationships with. Bulgaria itself, although a fascinating and beautiful country, isn't really a popular tourist destination at this point in time... it probably doesn't get many Eritreans or Tanzanians applying for visas. Like I doubt that Lesotho or Mali or Vanuatu or Tonga have Visa information for Bulgarians on their websites.Reply
What are the immigration requirements for a South African citizen to immigrate to Bulgaria. I also need to know if there are any health restrictions?Reply

Hi! I am Zaheer. I have been planning to set up garments/ textile manufacturing business in Ireland and have been buying industrial sewing machines for my business from European countries. I have found a large machine in Sandanski, Bulgaria which I would like to buy but would like to view this machine before I pay for it. For this purpose I would either need a business visit visa or a standard visit visa. I have requested the company who possess this machine. I have been recently refused UK visit visa as the visa officer did not satisfy with my docs/ evidences I provided, my law firm in UK is taking this to the court for judicial review as I have provided all necessary documents. ( getting U.K. visa are the world's most difficult visas, and their refusals rates are very high ). I wonder whether this UK visa refusals would have any impacts on my visa application to Bulgharia or not?. I am going to provide the invitation letter from the seller of this industrial machine which I would like to buy. Can someone suggest please in the lights of my current visa status? ThanksReply

I am from the British Overseas Territory Montserrat, do I need a visa to visit Bulgaria?Reply
Yes you need a tourist visa to visit Bulgaria. You can apply in the nearest BG embassy by presenting an invitation from Bulgarian or other nationality residing legally in Bulgaria or you can just book a holiday through travel agency. Its important during the interview in the embassy to present valid medical insurance and return flight tickets.Reply
I am Australian, I travelled over the land border twice, they just stamped me through, I didn't need to apply for anything.Reply
and it was only in August last year that i travelled through. I didn't have to do anything whatsoever. NO visa application, no invitation from a resident, no holiday booking, no hotel booking, no interview, no tickets. I did have medical insurance but I didn't have to show it to anyone.Reply
