The First Day of Spring

This is the day when school children traditionally take it on themselves to skip school and do something they consider more constructive - such as saying goodbye to winter by drowning an effigy representing the cold months of the year.

This tradition goes back a lot further than Christianity, and is one of several that sit quite happily alongside the traditions of the Roman Catholic Church in Poland.

Of course, we wouldn't dream of condoning truancy; but in any case you can expect to see a lot more youngsters about town than usual; well, it is tradition, after all...
