'The Pearl of Little Buda' is a precious find indeed, and one that has foodies hurrying all the way to the rundown district of Obuda for dinner. The chequered floor, frescoed ceiling, scarlet tablecloths and antique furniture all contribute to Kisbuda Gyongye's idiosyncratic charm, whilst succulent Hungarian delicacies such as beefsteak with goose liver or grilled perch have forged the restaurant's reputation as one of the best places to eat in Budapest. A light tinkling of the ivories rounds off the romantic mood as you settle in and browse through the well-selected wine list.

I had the pleasure of finding this jewel of a restaurant many years ago. Quite simply, it is the best restaurant that I have ever been to. The decor was truly beautiful and the ambience quite sublime. The waiters were true professionals, the food stunning and the wine absolutely perfect. Driving in our taxi through the rather grim streets surrounding the restaurant was rather unsettling and we even considered abandoning the idea and going elsewhere. But when we opened the door we were transported to a different world. It made our holiday all the more memorable. When recounting my rather limited travel experiences, I always recall this night as one of the most memorable of my life.
