Moscow - is it really dangerous?

I've just been offered a job relocation with my present company - to Moscow! It's a promotion, and I'm keen to do it, but I've heard bad things about the level of violence etc etc. I know how these things get blown out of all proportion, and I'm guessing its not tha bad - but is it? I have a wife and two young kids, so I also need to think about schooling and life outside work. Anyone living there who can give me some advice and thoughts? I'd really appreciate it!
