Rethinking Refugees Winter Light Festival

It's already November and it's also the month where people stand in solidarity to raise awareness about various social issues, for instance ''No Shave November''. Why not include another social cause to show solidarity with in November? We are proud and excited to announce, for the first time ever (and definitely not the last time), Rethinking Refugees - Winter Light Festival.

This is a festive time of the year, where we get to spend our time with our loved ones, with families, with friends; however it is important to remember that many refugees have left behind their homes, lost their families, and waiting endlessly for their asylum status to be approved in squalid conditions of some camps. Here is an opportunity to show solidarity with refugees, know more about their lives, their stories, find ways to raise awareness about them and of course help them.

At the Winter Light Festival we have theatre, music, discussions, documentary screening and workshops focusing on raising awareness about refugees. Here is an outline of what the festival entails, check the schedule below for specific details.

  • Lecture and Discussion about the current situation of refugees, about policies and about the psychology of the refugee 'crisis'.
  • Our very own premiere theatre production that focuses on real refugee narratives.
  • A wonderful charity concert brings in local musicians together to finish the event
  • A documentary screening and discussion
  • Workshops include - Communicating about refugees to kids, communicating about refugees through art, Crochet workshop, Perspective-taking workshop and our favourite post-card writing event wherein we write messages of solidarity and our Arabic speaking friends will translate it and we will send it to refugees in various camps in Greece.

The event is ticketed and the details of the ticket prices will be published soon. There is, of course, a festival pass as well. The money raised will be used for two purposes (i) donate money to an NGO (TBA) working in Greece to provide basic necessities for refugees (ii) donate money to the initiative to carry out their activities which would include organising the next event where we invite refugees!!

Beyond: The Journey // A Theatre Performance

Theatre is known to be a powerful tool for integration and empowerment.

With that in mind, as part of the Rethinking Refugees - Winter Light Festival, we of Rethinking Refugees - Knowledge and Action present the premiere show of the 'Phoenix Theatre Group' - Beyond: The Journey/ Poza: Tułaczka.

This performance will be unique, heartwarming, emotional and most importantly real. The play, based on REAL refugee narratives will transcend you to a place where refugees grew up, their journey, their hopes, their lives at a camp, the despair and the plain and simple notion that we are all humans. In this intimate show, you will be able to 'put yourself in their shoes'. What you hear will be real refugee narratives and we will have an opportunity to talk about this after the performance.

So what are you waiting for? Join us on this journey where we can narrate our refugee friend's stories and at the same time bring narratives together to find a common space for sharing.

DIRECTED BY: Marta Kontny
