What's On This Weekend // Events In Krakow // 16th & 17th February 2019

"What are you doing this weekend?"

Without fail, you will be asked this question every single Friday by co-workers, friends, children (we even ask ourselves)... but the answer often eludes us as we reply with a resounding "ummmmmmm", finger resting limply on our stupid planless chins.

When you are in a city as vibrant and active as Krakow, with a new festival or market every week, exhibitions on every corner and concerts next door, there's no reason we should be left umming and ahhing about how we're going to fill our mini-holiday-super-fun-space-time. With so much going on, it can even be overwhelming - the fear of missing out on something better leaves us in a procrastinatory paralysis. We feel your pain, so, we have done the research for you.

Here is our list of the best stuff happening this weekend in music, art, fun, culture, food & more. Now, get out there and have yourself an adventure!

Highlanders Festival

Honestly, this celebration of traditional mountaineer culture is worth a visit just for the outfits and the vodka but that's certainly not where the beauty of this event ends. This is the colourful and jaunty hair-down, heels up, barotone laughter, cheese smoking side of Poland that you need to dive into. If you want to understand the true raw beating heart of a Małopolskan then this is a necessary immersive experience. They may have had hard times what with their sheep blending in too well with the snow (constantly getting lost) but they sure knew how to let the sorrow out with moving ballads before cheering themselves up with some seriously hearty food.  In this festival you can look forward to such delights as caroling, dancing, sheparding, bands, folk art & more [photo credit: Wojciecha Kubiny]

Materia Prima Festival

Already in it's 5th year, Teatr Groteska's International Festival of Form Theatre has already caught the attention of Krakow's large and hard to please artistic community, along with the eye of the international stage.  Anticipation for Materia Prima has already been instilled in us by the quite realistic dinosaur promoting the festival in Teatr Bagatela. Look forward to truly refreshing performances from some of the coolest local and international theatres. Materia Prima takes the essence of theatre, circus and dance, mixes in some multimedia, puppet theater, masks and shadows, before mixing them all up in a big bubbling witches cauldron, infusing the actors with the power to defy what you beleived was a solid reality based upon unshakable scientific principals. A pure fantasia.

Sunday Funday Bulgarian dancing

You've probably never heard of it but what have you got to lose? Spend an evening learning horo, the most popular Bulgarian Folk Dance. It is a group dance, danced in a closed circle or in a pageant - the so-called horo cast. Hora is an extremely rich and diverse dance in terms of style, character, rhythm and pace. Hora is traditionally danced during family and national holidays, during traditional seasonal rituals, and historically before battle. Despite the dances historical importance they remain very popular today. Bulgarian outdoor dances are organized in many cities of Bulgaria, regardless of the season or weather.
The lasting popularity of these dances is probably due to their beneficial effects on health, physical condition and coordination. In addition, they give the opportunity to express emotions, leading to a general improvement in well-being. Common dance also social thing and helps to build relationships. During the meeting, dances and traditional costumes from various regions of Bulgaria will be presented. Also a few selected dance rituals will be shown, one of which was entered in 2009 into the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Siska // Concert

"SIKSA is the last representative of the future punk-style choreographic change. Rebellion to order without organizing tenders & clickbait controversy. A stage singer with two heads, deadly seriousness with square bass figures. An unskilled NOISE-FITNESS instructor sharing training for endurance, strength and combined forms. The "aerobic five freiheit" developed by her, based on conditions of instability and imbalance, is not adjusted to the individual needs of the participants. Conditional is the worst ad Gniezno since Baptism of Poland in Magdeburg in 966. For the Czechs, I want to be what Ewa Farna means to Poles. Formerly a superhero.
