Mixing Memory and Desire

Mixing Memory and Desire is inspired by the Gerry Mulligan-Chet Baker Quartet from around 1950. The first group with two wind instruments, bass and drums, thus without a harmony instrument. This gives great harmonic freedom in the solos, while in the written material the lines for baritone saxophone and trumpet are very refined.

Felicity Provan - cornet

George Hadow - drums

Raoul van der Weide - bass

JanWillem van der Ham - baritone saxophone

JanWillem van der Ham (Eindhoven, 1958) started playing the saxophone in 1973, inspired by groups such as Soft Machine, Solution and Alquin. From 1975 he participated in the improvisation workshop of Niko Langenhuijsen in De Effenaar. In 1976, the Zuid Nederlands Workshop Orchestra was formed in Eindhoven, Tilburg and Nijmegen, in which JanWillem gained his first stage experience. Also at that time the saxophone quartet De Vier Winden was formed with fellow workshop members from Eindhoven.

After a number of years of Architecture Studies in Delft, combined with participation in various improvisation workshops in the Rotterdam Jazz Bunker, JanWillem ultimately opted for a life as a musician. From 1979 he played in the group Hoketus, also in many jazz and improvisation groups such as Loos, J.C. Tans Orchestra, Sean Bergin's Mob, Ammerlaans Septet, Bik Bent Braam and the David Kweksilber Big Band. With bassoon as a second instrument he also plays contemporary music in the Ives Ensemble.
