Wroclaw Re-elects Dutkiewicz

Local government elections took place nationwide in November, seeing Wroclaw's incumbent Rafal Dutkiewicz re-elected as mayor. In Poland's largest cities the mayor is referred to as "president", and Wroclaw's new president won his city by the most dramatic majority in Poland.

Dutkiewicz, formerly of the Civic Platform party but now an independent, won the Wroclaw elections by securing an impressive 72 percent of the city's support. The runner-up was Slawomir Piechota of the Civic Platform party who finished with 11 percent of the votes.

Dutkiewicz achieved a majority win in the first round of voting (along with Warsaw incumbent Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz) meaning a run-off election was not needed in Wroclaw. However, in many cities across Poland, including Krakow, Poles will head back to the polls in December for a final round of voting.
