Hooligan Happy Violence at Vetra

Local football side, Vetra Vilnius' 'Vetra Stadium' saw some of the most violent scenes of its brief history this weekend when a match between the home team and Legia Warsaw erupted into violence. With Ventra leading 2-0 going into halftime of their Intertoto Cup match, dissatisfied Legia fans stormed the pitch and engaged in a violent altercation with police. The match was immediately abandoned as police attempted to control the hooligans and remove them from the stadium. Lithuanian TV broadcasts showed riot police using tear gas, flares, horses and dogs in the middle of the field to control the scene. About 100 Polish fans were arrested, most of whom were later released. While it's unclear whether the result will stand, the UEFA is likely to come down hard on Legia Warsaw, based on the actions of their fans.

In response to Legia fans' halftime rampage during Sunday's match (in which they attacked police with metal bars and stones), the UEFA has barred Warszawa Legia from this year's Intertoto competition and any additional European campaign for the next five years. Sunday's match, which Vilnius Ventra lead 2-0 at halftime, was marked a 3-0 victory for Ventra who move on to face the English side, Blackburn Rovers.
