Sharing is caring: New open bookcase in Josefstadt

Artist Frank Gassner introduced Vienna's fith open bookcase in the central district of Vienna-Josefstadt, public service broadcaster ORF reports today. Bibliophiles can now clean out their bookshelfs and take no longer needed novels and the like to the cupboard at Josef-Matthias-Hauer-Platz. And, with a bit of luck, you might find some unknown gems in return. As Gassner points out, the new cupboard is situated comfortably next to a bench and a Wrstel booth. The privately financed bookshelf is accessible twenty-four-seven and anyone can use it without registration.
The first open bookcase was established in Vienna-Neubau in 2010. Two more exemplars succeeded soon, providing the districts of Ottakring and Alserkrung with free fiction and non-fiction books.
Frank Gassner doesn't want to motivate the Vienneses to read in the first place. He rather aims at demonstrating an alternative to conventional consumerism. Following suit, another initiative built up an open bookcase in Margareten one year ago.
