Museum launches 'Worst of Klimt' contest

A Viennese museum has launched an unlikely contest to tie in with the 150th anniversary of painter Gustav Klimt's birth, with a quest to unveil the very worst products connected with the artist.

The Wien Museum's 'Worst of Klimt' looks set to become an online hit.

Members of the public have already begun uploading pictures onto the museum's Facebook page, highlighting some unashamedly tacky trinkets that the great Gustav would perhaps not be have been over the moon with.

Trainers, flip-flops, light shades, suitcases and teddy bears are just some of the kitsch crackers that have been exposed thus far, with the most memorable items ear-marked to feature in an exhibition that begins on May 16th.

The most commonly riffed image is The Kiss (1907-1908), a painting that belongs to the permanent collection of Vienna's Belvedere Gallery.

Vienna is currently awash with highbrow shows in tribute to the trailblazing painter, who was born on July 14th 1862 and died on February 6th 1918.

Curious Klimt fans can check out the Wien Museum's hall of infamy at their Facebook page.
