Vienna's status as a mecca for music lovers is given a big helping hand by the glory that is the Musikverein. A concert hall for the Society of Friends of Music was already in existence in the early nineteenth century but it wasn't until the demolition of the city's medieval walls that things really went up a gear. In 1857 the Ringstrasse began to take shape, and plans were set in motion for the crowning jewel of Vienna's musical kingdom. Architect Theophil von Hansen created a sensation, and to this day the Musikverein endures as one of the worlds supreme venues, with connoisseurs counting it as one of the holy trinity in the acoustic realm (Boston's Symphony Hall and Amsterdam's Concertgebouw make up the trio). Today the hall provides a home for the Vienna Philharmonic, and aficionados from across the world descend for the famed New Year Concerts.

Just a fabulous evening - make sure you do it. The concert we went to was like a sample of the famous New Year's Eve concert program.

Ofenloch Bry: My boyfriend and I dined at this restaurant last night and would not recommend it to any travellers. Aside from the 1.5 hour wait for our meals in the almost empty establishment the more offensive matter was that they were cold. We ordered the veal steak but were unsure if that was one of the meals we were actually served as it tasted very metallic. The service and wine were so so. If you do intend in dining here do not ask the waiters to recommend wine as they offered us only the cheapest bottle. Overall quite disappointing. The bar was not crowded when we visited and we received good service. Met two lovely ladies from Austria and enjoyed their conversation. Friendly place.
