Russia to host FIFA 2018

Russia got an early Christmas present when the golden envelope was opened on December 2nd and the Federation came out on top over joint bidders Portugal and Spain.

St. Petersburg has already been put forward as one of the host cities.

"You can take my word for it that the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia will be up to the highest standards, said Prime Minister Putin, shortly after the decision was announced. New modern stadiums and facilities will be built on time and to perfection."

This will be the first time for the tournament to be hosted in the East.

We are a nation of progress and pride, establishing a new, vibrant, modern Russia, enthuses the official blurb.

We are a people of uncompromising hospitality, ready to open our hearts and homes to friends, family and visitors alike. We are a people universally dedicated to our bid - from our government, to our economy, to our people.
