Latvian culture. Not something that most visitors to Riga take a great deal of time in considering before they arrive. Which is a pity, because if Ala Pagrabs is anything to go by there's a whole lot of great music, food, drinking and dancing that's just waiting to be discovered.
Ala's location - in a basement in the heart of the Old Town district of Riga, gives it a real traditional feel. But it's clearly more than just a show for the tourists who happen into the place. There's a real passion for sharing the wines, beers, and various local dishes not just of Riga but of Latvia as a whole. And all the while the entertainment is provided by either live acts or the country's only dedicated Latvian folk music radio station, Radio Oira.
