Editor's review

Hollywood it ain't, but Riga is the birthplace of one of the most controversial and influential movie makers to come out of Europe in the first half of the 20th century.

Sergei Eisenstein's best-known work is his masterpiece Battleship Potemkin. Having been born into the Russian Empire, he naturally focused his film-making on Slavic subjects, including other historical and biographical accounts.

The Riga Film Museum looks at all aspects of the cinematic history of this tiny Baltic state, and even holds a unique collection of amateur Soviet-Latvian movies. It's ever-changing exhibitions include costumes props, movies, and documentary sources about the development of Latvian film and its influence, albeit somewhat limited beyond Eisenstein, on others.
