Prague's First Gay Parade a Success

Thousands of people marched through the streets of Prague in August to celebrate the city's first gay pride parade and festival. About 300 police were on hand guarding the event, which was faced with some protesters, though the parade turned out to be peaceful, though a little wet from the drizzle.

The five-day festival was supported by ambassadors to Prague from 13 nations including the UK, Germany, and Canada after statements from a top aide to President Vaclav Klaus criticizing Prague's mayor for supporting "deviant fellow citizens".

Over 30 venues across Prague hosted events during the five days, including concerts, films, exhibitions, discussions, and parties.
