Euro 2012 gets funding and controversy

Lviv will receive 10.3 billion hryvnia (one billion euro), instead of the 5.3 billion hryvnia (550 million euro) initially promised to them by the government, to build a stadium and modernize the local airport.

Also, a city councillor wants the stadium at Lviv to be named after Stepan Bandera, the leader of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, who was, among other things, responsible for the murder of thousands of Poles during WWII.

The name would certainly politicise the tournament which is something that the director of EURO 2012 in Ukraine, Markiyan Lubkivsky, wants to stay away from.

The public should be consulted when choosing the name for the stadium, he says. The fact that not all Ukraine citizens see Bandera as a national hero is slightly reassuring.
