New kit for Mariacki trumpeters

The firefighters who sound the traditional hejnal mariacki from the tower of Krakow's most famous church have received 12,000 zloty worth of new instruments. The city has funded two new trumpets, to replace those that have been in use for up to 15 years. The tune, which is played every hour on the hour, harks back to the days when a watchman blew his own horn from the tower to warn Cracovians of an impending attack. It ends abruptly, because the watchman was killed by an arrow as he played. These days, it's the firefighters of the city who play the tune. You can see them in action on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays - but you will have to climb the steps to the top of the tower first.
