UNSOUND TALK: JON GIBSON AND BRITTON POWELL ON VISITATIONS

Jon Gibson has worked in composerly corners of minimalism since the 1960s, with Philip Glass, Steve Reich and others active in downtown New York. His early work Visitations, released via Glass’s Chatham Square label in 1973, mixed minimalism with found sounds and a heady sense of meditation. He was inspired, in part, by Land Art experimentation in the American desert, by artists including Walter De Maria. Gibson discusses his decades’ worth of work—including visual art based on numerological patterns and geometric phenomena—and, with collaborator Britton Powell, how he has transformed Visitations for a new live show. In conversation with ARTnews editor Andy Battaglia.
