Exhibition: Cat And Dog Life

The Historical Museum of the City of Cracow organizes a temporary exhibition ‘Cat And Dog Life’, opened from 29th of April to 25th of September 2016. Contrary to the widespread perception, the theme phrase of the exhibition contributed to creating stories about the coexistence between dogs, cats and human beings in domestic interior and urban space. The main thrust of this presentation is to examine the roots of modern attitudes in the relationships between people and animals. This is done by presenting the changes in the status and role of dogs and cats of the daily lives of the middle-class, as illustrated by the representatives of the Krakow circle from the 19th century. The exhibition will take place in two branches – the Hipolit House (which has had a resident cat, Hipolit, for 12 years), presenting the theme of a middle-class house (with reference to the permanent exhibition by the same title) and the Krzysztofory Palace, whose cellars house the exhibition presenting the activity of the Animal Welfare Association in Cracow, active in the years 1928- 1949. A major objective of the exhibition is strengthening of the image of the museum as an institution open to all. This is done using uncommon promotional means and accompanying events. In both branches, the exhibition will include two special spaces. One part will be devoted to dog visitors, the second part to pets from Cracow Animal Shelter, which were selected for adoption.

The main character of the exhibition in the Hipolit House will be domestic dogs and cats. Presented will also be animals in urban space, represented, e.g. by the prominent local event such as Dachshund Parade or a story about the most famous Cracow dog, Dżok (Jock).

The second part of the exhibition, devoted to the Animal Welfare Association, will be the first museum’s presentationof the Association’s activities. Since its beginnings, it has preserved full independence by not joining the structure of the National Animal Welfare Association, seated in Warsaw. Prominent citizens of Cracow were closely connected with the Association, for example Kazimiera Treterowa, Zygmunt Nowakowski and mayor Mieczysław Kaplicki. The organization has been very dynamic, and its activists intervened in the case of tortured and starved cats and dogs, tormented birds and cab horses. In 1932, the Association was the first one in Poland to have founded the institution of Extraordinary Inspector, who was responsible for the enforcement of the laws concerning animal care. One of the most important projects of the Association was the opening of the first emergency department for small animals in Poland in 1934.

‘Cat And Dog Life’ is one the first exhibitions in Poland devoted to animals as seen from a historical perspective.
