MAKOM. Dani Karavan. The Essence of Place

The ICC Gallery will open the first Polish exhibition of the work of Dani Karavan – a renowned Israeli artist, whose art works have been exhibited all around the world. Karavan is known for his site specific projects realised specially for particular places, and often so perfectly blended into landscape that they seem to be its integral part. He is an author of celebrated works such as the Monument to the Negev Brigade (1963–1968), the Memorial to the Sinti and Roma of Europe Murdered under the National Socialist Regime, or Passages, in honour of Walter Benjamin in Portbou (1994). The exhibition will offer an encounter with the artist’s work through the presentation of films, photographs, sketches, and models. The visitors will have an opportunity to see celebrated works such as Ma’alot in Cologne (2011), Kikar Levana square in Tel Aviv (1977–1988) or The Way of Human Rights in Nuremberg (1989–1993). Karavan’s references to his friendship with Tadeusz Kantor will provide a particular feature of the exhibition. Especially for the Krakow exhibition the artist prepared an installation in honour of Kantor. Karavan’s site specific works are always designed with particular location in mind – be it urban, open-air or museum/gallery space. In his works, the artist often makes use of quasi-architectonic forms and scale, provoking the viewers to move around the work. Dani Karavan commented on his work in the following way: “I think that in a sense my work is figurative, for it cannot exist without people. These individual creations are not made to be looked at. One needs to be inside them and to become a part of them. It is good when one who enters the place can see other visitors who move within their space”.
