On 22 January at 7.00 pm Zderzak Gallery will see the opening of a new exhibition of pictures by Łukasz Stokłosa, one of the most interesting young painters in Europe. We will see new works in a special arrangement. The exhibition will be focusing around the portrait of a young lady, in whom film enthusiasts will recognize French actress Isabelle Adjani in the role of Lucy Harker.

Together with the protagonist of this picture – and of one of the most beautiful fairy-tales in European cinema of the twentieth century – we shall drift through abandoned palace interiors, through gardens and orangeries. Come join us, trace the footsteps of a dark mystery, told, as ever in Stokłosa`s work, with a knowing wink…

This is the artist`s third solo exhibition at Zderzak, following A Winter`s Tale (2011) and The Composition of Paintings (2013). The title of the present exhibition – No. 392 – is another puzzle for the viewer to unravel. We shall try to solve it at the opening.

Łukasz STOKŁOSA (b. 1986) hails from Kalwaria Zebrzydowska. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, doing his diploma project in the studio of Professor Jacek Waltoś in 2010. The same year, he took part in the much-praised Ars Homo Erotica exhibition at the National Museum in Warsaw. In 2011 he made his Zderzak debut, at the splendidly received Winter`s Tale exhibition. His following Zderzak exhibition – The Composition of Paintings – took the prestigious Radio Kraków Brand for the best exhibition of the month. In 2013 he received the Lower Silesian Marshal`s Award in the Geppert Competition. In June 2014 he had his first solo exhibition abroad – GRUPPO DI FAMIGLIA IN UN INTERNO – at Schloss Assenheim in Germany. All the pictures were sold at the opening. Well-known art critic Paweł Leszkowicz called Łukasz Stokłosa the most promising artist of the younger generation. By way of confirmation, the painter was featured in Kurt Beers`s book 100 Painters of Tomorrow, released by the London/New York publisher Thames&Hudson. One of the world`s most influential blogs, America`s The Huffington Post, featured an enthusiastic review – of the titular hundred they selected their ten favorites, among whom was Łukasz Stokłosa.

Stokłosa`s painting is associated with the noir style, though it cannot be easily classified to any presently fashionable movement. The artist`s technical virtuosity, his particular “light” touch and remarkable ability to create an ambience make him an individual and unique phenomenon. His portraits are valued by collectors; they stand as a separate genre in the artist`s work. It is the portraits of film actors playing various characters, depicted in moments of crisis and breakthrough. They are marked by an aura of sadness, uncertainty, and fleeting beauty, as in the image of Isabelle Adjani in the role of Lucy Harker.
