Holocaust Through Eye Of A Needle

"Fabric of Survival: The Story of Esther Nisenthal Krinitz" is an illustrated story of life of a Jewish girl named Esther, who managed to survive the Holocaust. After many years she returns to her wartime memories, creating a series of remarkable needlework pictures.

Esther Nisenthal Krinitz was born in a village of Mniszek, in the Lublin region of Eastern Poland. As a teenager, she survived the Holocaust, assuming the identity of Polish Catholic farm girl. Many years later Esther decided to share her wartime memories with her family. Trained as a dressmaker, but untrained in art, she created a collection of 36 needlework and fabric collage pictures that together form a very moving story of survival.

Consisting of photographic images of the original art, the exhibition at the Galicia Jewish Museum is the first presentation of Krinitz’s work outside the United States.
