Editor's review

Remodelled many times over the ages, the Stary Teatr (Old Theatre) is indeed the oldest theatre in Poland, the fourth after Warsaw, Lublin and Lviv.

It has been seated in a corner townhouse at Szczepanski Sq since 1799, that later has been revamped with a magnificent art nouveau facade. During historical turmoil the Stary remained a hub for Polish culture, staging not only the best of Polish literature adaptations, but European as well. It was here that "Krakow School" in acting was born, a technique that abandoned solo shows and affected declamation in favour of deeper analysis of the literary text. The femme fatale and grande dame of Polish theatre, Helena Modrzejewska (Modjeska) was one of the actors who ventured in this innovative technique, with plenty of success as an unparalleled performer of Shakespearean characters in Europe and America. In 20th c. the theatre has became home to some of the most exquisite stage personalities ever: Anna Polony, Anna Seniuk, Anna Dymna, Teresa Budzisz- Krzyżanowska, Wiktor Sadecki, Jerzy Bińczycki, Jan Nowicki, Marek Walczewski, Wojciech Pszoniak, Jerzy Stuhr, Jerzy Radziwiłowicz, Jerzy Trela and Tadeusz Huk.

Today, two trends determine the repertory of the Stary Theatre: the reflection on the contemporary drama and theatre (as part of the baz@rt festival), and reinterpretations of classics (under the umbrella of the re_wizje festival).

A beautiful building that I'm lucky enough to see every day from my window! Very tasteful inside, with a broad repertoire of productions. Obviously the language is going to make it difficult for foreigners to fully appreciate the performances, but take it from me - this is the Old Vic of Poland!
